RN214 Performance issues

I have actually had this issue for a while.  But, just getting around to dealing with it in depth.  Performance on my RN214 has been marginal since I purchased it.  My configuration is as follows: 4 Western Digital Green WD20EZ 2TB disks.  Setup in Raid 5.  Connected to a 1 Gb network.  I've always felt the performance was not great.  Today I finally did some testing with the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.  My read speeds are about 34mb/s and write is about 25 mb/s.  I have swapped ethernet cables and have eliminated the switch.  So my NAS is currently directly connected to the router (Netgear Orbi RBR50).  The macbook I am doing the testing with is connecting directly to the router wirelessly.  My wireless speeds on the macbook directly to the internet are 400+ mb/s.  So, wireless should not be the issue.  I have also disabled ReadyCloud just for testing purposes and I currently have no other apps running on the ReadyNAS.  I have mainly been using it for Timemachine backup and basic file storage but would like to starting using it to stream.  But can't because of the horrible performance.

How are you measuring the wireless speed?

I don't have a Mac, but looking at screenshots of Blackmagic it appears to be reporting MB/s (megabytes), not mb/s (megabits).  FWIW, 34 MB/s translates to 272 mb/s.

What is your ISP speed (just wanting to sort out if the 400 mbps is limited by the mac-orbi link, or if it is limited by the ISP WAN connection)?

Have you tried a different speed test (for instance, copying a large video to/from the NAS, and just timing it?

Not disks I would recommend (FWIW, WD doesn't recommend them for RAID either). I generally suggest NAS-purposed drives for an RN200 series.  Still, these might not be the issue.

Have you downloaded the full log zip file?  If so, look in disk_info.log to check the disk health, and look in network_settings.log for ethernet issues.  It'd be best to download the log zip before and after the transfer test, so you can sort out the errors that occured during the test itself.

You are obsolutely correct.  I did not see that Blackmagic had "MB" not mb.  Gotta pay closer attention to the "B". :). So, that said, the performance is not to bad afterall.  On your question about ISP speed..I have 400 mb/s Internet.  So, I am getting right at what I am supposed to get getting when I am hitting the internet.  So, I will do some more testing and see what I come up with.  Thx for the input.

Then it's possible that your local wifi is faster than the 400 mb/s.

The RN214 is capable of delivering > 100 MB/sec for large file transfers. I'm not sure exactly what Blackmagic is doing, but there are some loads that are always much slower - for instance directory browsing.

If you are comfortable using ssh, then it is possible to install some stuff that would let you measure the network throughput w/o doing file transfers.  It would also be possible to check the raw read/write speeds of your array (with no network).

But looking in the logs would be a good next step.  A failing disk would definitely hurt the speed, and of course is something you'd want to replace.
