RN3138 NAS is dead

Hi, I am a volunteer IT worker in the town of Buala, on Santa Isabel Island, in the Solomon Islands.

A. The NAS (RN3138) used by the provincial government has just failed.

B. It had been operating OK in an AC room for 2.5 years

C. No lights or fans working, even when a known-good power lead is connected.

D. The four HDD are known to be OK (no faults)

E. Getting anything here is difficult as it comes by ferry from Honiara or by small plane

My questions:

1. Can I be reasonably sure that buying a new PSU for the NAS will fix the problem?

2. If I buy another RN3138 (maybe not the exact model - mine is RNR-4B), will the data be rad OK if I insert the 4xHDD, in exactly the same order?

3. Do I need to update any configuration, firmware etc on the NAS first?

4. How do I buy another PSU?

5. Is there anything else I should check or think about?

thanks

Chris ph +677-35207 (my office)

You can directly migrate the disks to any x86 OS-6 ReadyNAS.  So another RN3138 would work, as would the RR3312, RR4312, or RR4360.  While it is also possible to migrate to an arm OS-6 ReadyNAS (RN2xxx series), I don't recommend doing that.

If the disks are healthy, and there was no corruption of the file system when the system failed (due to lost writes), then the data should be intact.  If the volume is damaged, Netgear does offer a data recovery service (which is done remotely) - https://kb.netgear.com/69/ReadyNAS-Data-Recovery-Diagnostics-Scope-of-Service

If the four disks can be connected to a PC (either with SATA or USB adapter/docks), then ReclaiMe software can also be used. https://www.reclaime.com/

FWIW, if there is no backup plan in place for the NAS, you might recommend that one be put in place after the system is put back on line.

The warranty on the NAS is 5 years.  So if it was purchased new from an authorized reseller, then you should check the warranty status and arrange for an RMA replacement from paid netgear support (my.netgear.com).  JohnCM_S and Marc_V can help with this process if you have difficulty.  They should also be able to help with your other questions.

I've never seen the insides of an RN3138.  I seriously doubt Netgear will sell a replacement supply, since they don't sell parts for anything else.  I believe the chassis is manufacturered by Chenbro, but the power supply (at least from the external view) does not appear to be standard Chenbro.  It looks like it could be a standard Mini ITX, but check to see if there is any marking on it that's not Netgear's.

I'll probably play it safe and try sourcing a new one from Australia. Putting in a new PSU is no guarantee that I'll end up with a working device and the time delay + non-access to data, is not worth the risk.

I don't know where the NAS was purchased as it happened before I arrived here. Maybe it can be tracked via the serial number and through the Netgear web site. I'll try that.
