If it's a firmware problem, the fan would normally start and stay at full speed. But you could have two unrelated problems, I suppose.
Anyway, that you are still under warranty is a good thing, and you should pursue that avenue.

I'm not aware of any ReadyNAS shutting down immediately because of a fan issue. The CPU would eventually overheat and it would shut down, but that should take longer.
So the unit comes on if you disconnect and re-connect the power, but not when you press the power button? That sounds like a problem with one of the internal power regulators, probably the 3.3VSB which powers the NIC and power on/off circuit. Something in the NAS likely is overheating, but not due to the fan not working. Again, that would take a while. Without a schematic, there's nothing to be done about that, I'm afraid.
The standby power is on all the time, even when the NAS is off. If you have ever allowed the unit to get hot, even when "off", that can cause problems. But since it is on all the time, it's also the one most likely to fail for any other reason.
If you unplug it and leave it unplugged longer, does it lengthen the time before it shuts down? If it does, then the 3.3VSB is an even more likely cause.

I talked with tech support and they think the firmware in the box got corrupted somehow. Unfortunately I am on a sales trip until next week so I can't try their suggestion of applying power to the unit with the drives out and the reset held in to see if the boot menu comes up. I will try that this coming week when I return to my home office.
Good suggestion to see if it stay running longer if I have it unplugged for a much longer time. Since I am away its completely un-plugged and powered off for at least 6 days. I hope that shows something.
Tech support tells me the chassis is still under replacement warranty at the moment. So that might be good news. I just hope I see something from the boot menu or trying the boot from USB.

Could not get to the boot menu as the unit powers on then off within a few seconds.
Worked with Tech Support for a couple hours before they issues an RMA for a replacement chassis. Should arrive on Monday.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
