Running 1 hard disk on an ultra 2 plus.
Hi everybody
Sorry if this has been covered before but I have been searching for hours and have a few questions. I have just purchased a readynas ultra 2 plus and 1 hitachi 2TB hard disk OF12115
1. Can I run with the 1 hard disk for now and add the second in a few months? May this cause any problems?
2. Is there anything I need to do different in the setup if I was able to use 1 hard disk?
3. Once I added the second hard disk, would raid be automatic or would I need to re-configure the NAS?
Thanks
Gav

It shouldn't cause any issues, but I do recommend that you keep your backup up to date. You have no redundancy with one drive. (RAID is not a substitute for backup anyway).G man wrote: 1. Can I run with the 1 hard disk for now and add the second in a few months? May this cause any problems?
The default xraid-2 is fine if the second disk will be for redundancy. If you intend to use the second disk for more capacity, then you will won't want xraid-2. So you will need to override the default disk configuration, using RAIDar.G man wrote: 2. Is there anything I need to do different in the setup if I was able to use 1 hard disk?
Xraid-2 would be automatic. Flex-Raid would require some Frontview configuration when you add the second disk.G man wrote: 3. Once I added the second hard disk, would raid be automatic or would I need to re-configure the NAS? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredStephenB is correct.
One thing I would add is to be sure to use disks from the Hard Disk HCL. Hopefully the Hitachi you purchased is on this list. - PapaBear1ApprenticeThe Hitachi 0F12115 is one of the part numbers for the HDS723020BLA642 which is on the list.
Gman, for future reference here is the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).
Here is the Newegg listing for reference as it lists both numbers.
(Hitachi puts the model number on the drive label, but uses an opaque anti-static bag with only the PN on the outside. Can be confusing if you don't know all the numbers. - G_man1AspirantThanks guys, I did know about the list and the Hard Drive that PapaBear is the one i have purchased. Thanks for your help. I will be setting this up very soon, should be fun.
