You mean like the 2xHitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 drives I have in my NVX? Yes. They do very well in fact. All SATA drives are backward compatible, the newest drives can even be used in the SATA1 interface found in the older ReadyNAS units.
In fact a look at the specs will show that even the original SATAI drives will saturate a gigabit network. A gigabit network will transmit data at 1000Gb/s while the SATAI drives will send that data at 1,500Gb/s. The data speed of the hard drives has never been the limiting factors. In my NV+ for example with SATA1 interface, it was the CPU while in the newer desktop x-86 machines it will either be the CPU or the NIC.
