I assume Netgear understand how important the HCL is for prospective buyers, so I can't imagine they are not testing new drives. So the reasonable conclusion would then be (2).
Same here, I'm about to buy a NAS but I need to know which of the current 3TB drives it support (mentioned several models here, although I happen to be more ReadyNAS NV+ v2 oriented).
If situation (2) is indeed the case, if would be great if Netgear specifies this on their HCL as well. I.e. not just the drives that passed the test, but also explicitly mentioning the drives that failed, so we know which drives to avoid (or at least know we're taking an extra risk when using them anyway).
