3) I think this should be possible on the 314. It may require some configuration changes on your PC and/or NAS. Try running a backup and if you get an error let us know what it is and we can go from there.

I've been doing a little more research on the system image backup and it appears that this is a known issue.
The error I get when trying to create a system image backup under Windows 8 is ...
"The version does not support this version of the file format (0xC03A0005)".
It appears that this relates to "Sparse file system", SMB versions and "strict allocate = yes" in the SMB config file etc.
All of which means absolutely nothing to a mere mortal like me! I just want an out of box solution that works.
I did find a Netgear Kb this morning which seems highly relevant and does inspire a degree of confidence wrt an upgrade to the 314 ...

To nail it, perhaps I should post separately to ask if anyone is getting Win8 System image backup to work on a 314 without any techno twiddling!
