The OS boots from the hard drive, so you need at least one. It does not need to be very large, you could use an old one you have lying around, so long as it's SATA. Note that all contents will be deleted, and it works best if you first delete any existing partitions.

Hi Sandshark,
Thanks for your prompt response to my issue, if you don’t mind I have additional two questions please
- The drive that is needed to reboot the system should be their permanently, means not only during the first time setup, i.e. I can’t remove it afterwards otherwise the OS will not reboot again.
- I have extra WD 1TB that I am not using it and thinking of pulling this out of its external housing and put it into my ReadyNas, is this possible? have anyone tried this before? I think its 2.5" 12mm hard drive.
Many Thanks

Hi ,
to the First question Yes you need to have a Permanent hard drive in the NAS, to used the external HDDs. The whole system , setting etc. will be on it.
As I know it should be possible to Install a 2.5 " HDD into the NAS pocket

Thank you Blue screen for your comments and the link, hope the WD won't come with fixed/welded usb connector, if the usb connector is built into the external cover ant not to the SATA then that would be great!
thank sgain.
