- chirpaLuminaryYou would want Gigabit for the best speeds. Most people have a separate switch and router because of that. 95% of the routers out there are 10/100, not gigabit. So they add-on a gigabit switch for the faster computer links. There is one or two N routers with gigabit ports. There are two listed here: http://www.netgear.com/Products/Routers ... eways.aspx
- GrievousAspirantAnother reason is also simply location sometimes, the cable modem comes in the wall on one side of the house so you run 1 cat5e or cat6 line across to the other side of the house to a switch where you need your wired connections.
- PompeysieAspirantThanks guys. So if I get a separate gigabit router what modem should I buy? Does it matter? I have ADSL broadband.
Thanks
Simon - dbott67GuideCheck with your ISP. Some ISPs customize the modem, making it difficult for end-users to buy "off-the-shelf" replacements. They also may sell a preferred unit.

- xduaneAspirantI apologize for the elementary nature of this question, but in the illustration below, would the PCs attached to the switch AND wireless PCs BOTH be able to access the NAS? And if the NAS was attached to the switch, would the wireless PCs still have access?
I'm looking to have my ReadyNAS NV accessible to one machine via a wired Ethernet connection and three others via wifi. Networking is not my strong suit, so I thought I'd ask before attempting myself.
Thanks.tcblack wrote: A Picture is worth a thousand words. DUO on the left side. - GrievousAspirantNot really for this thread, but yes as long as all of the IP addresses are within the same subnet, plugging the ReadyNAS into either the router or the FS116 switch should be visible to any computer on your network. I would suggest looking into replacing that FS116 with a gigabit ethernet switch to possibly give yourself some more bandwidth with the pretty good number of systems that you have, as well as maximizing the available bandwidth of the ReadyNAS.

- phoAspirantI'm using a ReadyNAS NV+ with 4x 1tb WD10EACS drives as the main storage for my movies
Movie playback is through an old school Xbox with XBMC installed
I'm moving into a new appartment soon, I'll make some pictures then :) - chirpaLuminaryThis is my recent setup:
ReadyNAS Pro with (3) 1.5TB disks and an EVA9000 hooked up to a 52" LCD.
Added a few things since (like better sound, and a laptop on the tv for those work from home days), no new pics yet though.
No cable TV, antenna picks up ~10 HD stations though. torrent RSS feeds -> ReadyNAS -> EVA = TV on demand ;)
