ST2000DL003 Redux
I have a ReadyNas Ultra 4 Plus running 4.2.20, with two ST2000DL003-9VT166 drives in X-RAID2. I've never upgraded the FW on these drives, nor have I ever had any problems with them. However, I'm thinking about expanding to three or four disks. Obviously, these drives are no longer available. But I'm concerned about mixing drives, especially with these problematic drives in the mix.
Any suggestions for a smooth migration? Current drive recommendations that might play well with the current drives? I'd like to keep the current two drives in the expanded RAID group if possible.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat firmware is on these drives? Check under Status > Health > SMART+ in Frontview.
- atebitTutorFirmware version CC3C
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could update the firmware on these drives.
I would consider drives designed for NAS use not Green disks. - atebitTutorThanks for the reply! I was considering upgrading the firmware, but since I've had no problems in over a year I didn't want to tempt fate .
Any suggestions on a drive model that will place nicely with these current ones beyond avoiding the Green drives? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWell maybe a 2TB NAS drive. Both WD and SeaGate make some. The WD RED and SeaGate NAS disks are good choices. Though do check the compatibility list. NetGear will likely refuse support if you use disks outside the list.
- atebitTutorThanks.
Anybody out there running a pair of ST2000DL003 drives along with one or more drives of a different model number that works well for you? If so, what manufacturer/model/drive FW version are you running? - fastfwdVirtuoso

The 2TB Seagate NAS drive is model ST2000VN000 ($118 at Amazon). If you decide that you don't need a NAS drive, the 2TB desktop drive I'd recommend is the ST2000DM001 ($86 from Amazon).
For 4TB drives (you'll have to add two of them to increase your RAID array size by 4TB), the model numbers are ST4000VN000 ($200) and ST4000DM001 ($162).
If it matters to you (it wouldn't to me), the ST2000DM001 is the only one of those four that is on Netgear's Ultra 4 Plus Hardware Compatibility List. - atebitTutorThanks for the recommendation! Ironic that the non-NAS drive is on the HCL... :)
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe NAS drive is fairly new whereas the alternative is an older product.
