ST2000DM001 reliability experience ?

Seems like the only option I can easily get for 2TB that is on the HCL for my NV+ is this drive. I note a previous topic where users were experimenting with and starting to use this drive in their NAS systems and was wondering what experiences you have had with them in terms of reliability. I ask because when I look at reviews for this drive from my usual supplier, I see quite a few that pan it for reliability reasons. This makes me think twice about going ahead with a purchase, so would like to cut through some FUD and get info from NAS users on this drive.

My alternatives are to get a WD20EFRX or ST2000NM0033 (ie: some NAS quality drives, neither of which is on HCL for NV+, though).

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!

  • I have 4 ST2000DM001 running in a RN104 since june 2013.
One of them started to show errors last montb and i'll get a replacement today.

I'd opt for one of the dedicated nasdrives from WD or Seagate (that is what i should have done)
  • ST2000VN000 isn't on HCL for NV+ but is another alternative to the ST2000NM0033, it's not 7200RPM but it's cheaper and I don't think the NV+ would really see any difference with speed. Check it out. I have ST4000VN000 * 4 in my RN104, they are they have been there for a year and I have no error of any kind, they run cooler than normal disks too.
I would avoid desktop model personally. I would go for a non HCL model if your NAS isn't under warranty. If it is, I would ask support if one of the suggested NAS HDD model would work since they are supported for newer NAS. That way if you have an answer saying yes they can't drop support (but they can also choose to answer no).

PS : see the post of MDGM there : viewtopic.php?f=7&t=77290
He seems to tell that DM are not that great.

I would also note that your NV+ warranty (3 years) has expired which limits the amount of support available anyway.

If you can't find a decent disk on the compatibility list for a legacy device, but still make a good choice e.g. a NAS drive or an enterprise drive, then in some cases we may still be able to help but it does depend on the issue.

Regardless of what drive you choose and whether or not you open a support case for issues you can seek help here on the forums.

Also regardless of your drive choice if you store important data primarily on your NAS you should backup your data. Don't trust your precious data to just one device.
  • Thanks all for your insights.

My NV+ is definitely no longer under warranty - even had to replace a bad PSU on it recently (no loss of data).

ST2000VN000 is not carried by my usual retailer, so may not be a good option for me.
Another option could be ST2000NC001 - not sure if anyone's tried that one ? (about $40 cheaper than the NM0033)

Cheapest option is definitely the WD20EFRX (though spindle speed is 5400 rpm) - reviews also seem to indicate good reliability.

May just go the WD path, since it seems a number of people have been successful with this drive.
