ST2000VN000 on the Duo V1 - thoughts?

I'm upgrading my Duo V1's drives from 1TB to 2TB (raid 1)

After doing a bit of research, my decision came down to the ST2000VN000 or the WD20EFRX.
(I considered the ST2000DM001, but that seemed to get a lot of mixed reviews.)
Anyway, I'm leaning on the ST2000VN000.

Is anyone using the ST2000VN000 on a Duo V1?

Anyone have any recommendations for a 2TB drive for the Duo V1 ?

-Thanks in advance!

  • I'm using the WD20EFRX, and haven't had any problems.

Some people have used the Seagate VN line in other ReadyNAS, but I don't recall seeing any posts regarding the v1 platforms. Generally failure rates of Seagate consumer drives are higher than Western Digital's (according to BackBlaze), though whether that also applies to the ST2000VN000 is hard to say.

You should check your system for 4K alignment - if you don't have that now, then a factory reset would be needed to get best performance. There's more information on that here: http://www.rnasguide.com/2011/06/22/why ... -readynas/
  • I have 4*ST4000VN00 in a RN104 and so far I had no problem. 2 of them have been there for more than a year, the other two for around 10 months. None of them shows any sign of weakness, either in smart status or physically noticeable (strange noise, difficulty to power up...). I have a preference for WD myself but since they were lagging to release 4Tb disks I chose seagate and it seems a good choice so far. I guess either choice will be a good one but no matter the brand of the disks, you should have an up to date backup.

    Thanks for the info!

-Funny you should say that about Seagate, because the real reason why I'm upgrading is because one of the two drives currently in my Duo V1 is a Seagate - and it failed :(
Anyway, I already bought the disks so I'll just stick with the Seagates for now.

-As for the 4K issues, I've decided to just completely start fresh with a factory default after updating the RAIDiator firmware.

    One question:
After updating to the latest firmware (RAIDiator 4.1.13 at the moment), and updating to the latest RAIDar on my PC (4.3.8 ), then all I have to do is put in the two 2tb disks I just bought and the rest is "easy?"

(I do have data waiting to be put back onto the Duo - but that's been backed up already to a seperate external HD)

    Thanks again

Yes. Power down the NAS, and put in the new disks. A factory install should automatically happen.

If you are planning to restore the configuration through frontview, make sure you re-install any addons first you have installed. If you don't, then you will get stuck later on.

As a corollary - if there are add-ons you no longer want, then uninstall them now, and then save the config.
  • Thanks for the help
    All went well.
The two ST2000VN000 drives are working nicely.
Even when under writing/reading, the two drives are quiet - more so than the other drives I had before.
