What is the acceptable method for validating "unsupported" drives?

Thank you

Setup multiple NAS units and purchase a big batch of drives. Test them in the NAS units, doing things like horizontal expansion, vertical expansion, disk scrubbing, thrashing the drives to their limits and a variety of other tests designed to put drives through their paces. If enough units pass then the drive is good.

If you use "unsupported" disks and have problems then NetGear will deny support. There may be compatibility issues. Best to stick to drives on the compatibility list.
