Swapout ReadyNasDuo for ReadyNas???
I have an old and well served ReadyNAS DUO running in X-Raid with 2 x 2TB discs that I would like to replace with a more up-to-date cabinet that would allow me to add more discs. I would also like to be able to take the existing discs and move them into the new cabinet without losing data and thus obviating the need to copy data between an oild and new NAS. It will also remove the need to initially buy new discs, though I want to be able to add more discs later.
My questions are simple, though possibly the answers will not be, with the questions being;
1. Is it possible to do what I want to do?
2. is there a recommended product - I am considering a RN21400 | Storage | Wired | Business | NETGEAR
3. will it be as simple as taking the discs from one machine and slotting them into new machine (I hope so)
4. the existing discs are X-Raid (effectivel Raid 1), can I change this to Raid 5 by adding more discs?
Hopefully easy and simple question for knowledgable people - which isnt me, hence asking the question.

Unfortunately not. The current systems are very different from the Duo, so you cannot migrate the disks and preserve the data.
You'll either need to back up the data and restore it after setup, or start with new disks in the new NAS. If you start with new disks, you can use backup jobs to transfer the data from the Duo (which is better than using drag and drop from a PC).
Honestly, you should back up your NAS anyway - RAID simply isn't enough to keep your data safe.

That's a reasonable choice to replace the Duo. One thing you should know - there are some rumors here that Netgear is abandoning the NAS market. Whether true or not, ReadyNAS are hard to find right now, and many are overpriced. So you should also look at prices for other brands.

As noted above, you can't migrate your disks to a current ReadyNAS and preserve data.
But if you use XRAID and have 2 disks in a current system, you'd also have RAID-1. Adding an additional disk would automatically convert the array to RAID-5.
