Swapping Drives between NAS's

Hi, firstly a bit of background.....

One of my NV+ v2 NAS's is configured with 4x3Tb disks. The device started reporting SMART errors on one of the drives and, eventually, offlined the drive (bay 2 if that triggers any thoughts....). I replaced the drive like-for-like and, although the NAS recognises the new drive and reports that it will sync it into the raid, it still shows up as 'failed'.

I've checked the drive itself by installing it into a caddy and attaching it directly onto my Mac, formatting it and writing files to it. This leads me to suspect a failure in the NAS itself.

I also have a second NV+ V2 NAS, so my question is......

Can I power down my suspect NAS, remove the drives, install them in my second NAS and power that one up? Will the second NAS just 'pick them up' or will it try and format the drives, deleting all my data?

Thanks,

  • The OS is installed on the drives, so if you move them with both systems powered down there should be no problem. You might want to ensure that both NAS are running the same firmware first.

Did you try shutting down, removing the power for a bit, and then starting up again?

Also, if you can run a SMART self-test on the drive (from your MAC), that might also be useful.

    Do you have a backup?

We don't recommend migrating non-redundant arrays except as a last resort.
  • Thanks Stephen,

Leaving the device unplugged for a time sorted out the problem.
