Transfer the hard drive from a failing Readynas 312? Planning for inevitable failure..

I've got a RN312, firmware 6.10.10. I kept extras in case any failed, and I think one is on it's way. It humms a bit louder than the normal (and louder than the others I have), and caused interference with the sound from the computer. The Readynas has two 20TB Toshiba hard drives, which have functioned perfectly. I'm wondering if anyone has successfully just transferred a working hard drive from one Readynas 312 to another; would it just boot up normally? As long as the firmware matches? Otherwise I'd have to reinstall a backup to a different 312 which of course, takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r.  I'll leave this up, if anyone knows the answer to this. If not, I will try it with a much smaller drive (500MB) first, to see if it's feasible.

Thanks everyone.

Oh, for anyone who doesn't know, the 20 TB CMR Toshiba drives work just fine. nothing special needed, just install the drives, plug the nas in, and it  goes to work all by itself just perfectly, as usual. I have two others working like this one.

That might not mean the NAS is failing.  Large drives use more power than the smaller sizes.  That also means more heat (since all the power eventually becomes heat).  So it is not surprising that the fan is working harder.

In any event, the chassis fan can be replaced if it is failing.

I haven't done this with the RN312, but I have migrated between other ReadyNAS models.  It does work.

As far as firmware goes, the destination NAS will compare the firmware in its flash against the disks.  If the firmware in the flash is newer, it will update the disks from the flash.  If the firmware in the flash is older, then the flash is updated from the disks.  But I do suggest matching the firmware first.

Before migration, then you might want to do power up the NAS with a spare disk now.  Make sure the firmware is up to date.  Then power down the NAS and power up with that disk in second slot -  just to make sure the spare chassis completely works.

  • Yes, I've done a quick install on all the spare ones using a 1TB Toshiba drive, using each bay to make sure they work. I do remember reading about the availability of changing the fan, which I can manage. Anyway it was the odd audio noise interference that got me; so I changed the power brick and that seems to have solved the problem for the moment, I was just seeing if anyone had managed switching boxes safely. Thanks!
