Transition from ReadyNAS Duo v1 to ReadyNAS 104

Hello TheTomahawk,

Your current ReadyNAS is a Sparc-based OS4 NAS while the RN104 is an OS6 NAS. You cannot use the same disk and expect the data be intact. If you can still access the data, back up first. You can still use the same disks with RN104 but it won't keep the data, it needs to format the disks since these disks were used on a different platform and OS.

Although you can try using the same disks after formatting them, there is no guarantee that they will work as they should with the RN104 if they are not listed on the HCL. It is recommended to check HCL first when using ReadyNAS systems so you know which disks to get.

Thanks. It's a pity. I guess I'll wait until I have enough money to upgrade with new discs so I can copy the data.

Any strategies for copying data across the two, keeping user ownerships and permissions?

You want to align UIDs and GIDs, and then use the web ui backup (Rsync) to transfer data. I recommend doing that share by share.

If all the files in each share should have a common owner, then simply do the rsync, and then set the owner/group for the share after it is copied.

You can re-purpose the NV+ as a backup device for at least some files on the RN104 - which is what I've done with mine.
