As further information, I don't recall doing anything paricularly difficult to set it up initially.

Your NAS uses SMB 1.0 to host the network shares. Microsoft has begun to deprecate SMB 1.0 (the current version is SMB 3).
Start by going into "turns window features on or off" in Windows, and make sure the SMB 1 client is enabled in the PC.

ok - I've enabled the SMB 1 client.
From Windows File Explorer, I do not see the NAS listed when I click on Network in the sidebar. Similarly, when I log into my router, I can see a list of devices, with MAC addresses and IP addresses, but none which match the NAS.
However, I was able to type in http://nas in Firefox, and this showed me a backup USB drive which is plugged into the NAS. I hadn't tried this before, so I may have been able to do this previously. It changes the address to https://nas/shares/ and as shown in the attached image.
