Upgrading firmware on ReadyNAS 3200

I have inherited an old ReadyNAS 3200 with firmware version 4.2.22.  I want to upgrade it to the newest firmware 4.2.31 but am unsure if there is a step process or if I can just load 4.2.31.

This is part of a production network and am unsure about how long this might take to upgrade.  The system is also over 80% filled.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hi warrendistr,

    Welcome to the Community!

    There should be no issues in updating the firmware from 4.2.22 to 4.2.31. You can just directly update the firmware to 4.2.31. This process would normally only take a few minutes but it will be best to do it during downtime.

      just to add a possible word of caution- since this is rack mounted business nas, and you are using it in production, and it has not been updated in a while, and most likely has a potentially very high uptime;

      one thing you should be potentially prepared for is a forced volume scan after/during the upgrade/reboot process.

      These older 4.x systems use ext4 file systems and after a certain period of time, a file system check gets scheduled for during the next reboot.

      if a scheduled fskchk is performed, it could stretch a 10 minute upgrade window into several hours of potential down time.

      so 1) and this always important/critical for production business data *make sure you have a current backup of all data* before you do the upgrade/reboot.

      2) make sure you have a plan B if the device does go into a long file system check and/or it detects any file system errors/problems, or a drive fails during the upgrade/reboot/fschk process.

      You should most definately upgrade your device to keep up with any security/performance updates, but just take appropriate steps and caution to avoid any surprises.
