VMware Support & NO_ROOT_SQUASH

I want to use the ReadyNAS Duo as my datastore for VMware ESX 3.5. Is the ReadyNAS Duo compatible with VMware? And does the Ready NAS support NFS? Also, does it support the NO_ROOT_SQUASH option? This is required or at least recommended for VMware.

  • On my Netgear ReadyNAS 1100 there is no explicit way to set no_root_squash.

    First I had to add the hosts that I wanted to have root access to the Shares->Shares Listing->NFS->root-enabled hosts list.
    I entered the fully qualified domain names.

    Second, I went to Shares->Shares Listing->Advanced Options
    and changed Share Owner and Share Group to "root" and enabled the checkbox
    "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above setting", then clicked on Apply.

    This took a while to complete in the background. A pop-up appears when it is done.

    I did the last step because VMware software operates as "root" and expects directories and files that it operates on are the same.

    Now I can access my VMs on my Netgear NFS share and even perform fault tolerance operations/backup. 8)
