VMware Support & NO_ROOT_SQUASH
I want to use the ReadyNAS Duo as my datastore for VMware ESX 3.5. Is the ReadyNAS Duo compatible with VMware? And does the Ready NAS support NFS? Also, does it support the NO_ROOT_SQUASH option? This is required or at least recommended for VMware.

VMware should work with it fine. What are you going to be using the NFS datastore for? Just files/resources, or the actual VMs? You might find the throughput on the Duo too slow for hosting VMs, where the NVX or Pro would be a better fit. - sloth61AspirantI plan to use it for VM's. This is for a lab environemnt where I'm not too concerned with performance. Will the Duo be adequate? Obviously I'm trying to keep the cost down. Can you give me a ballpark estiimate of the price difference between the Duo and the two other models you recommended?
- dbott67GuidePrice difference varies depending on the size and number of drives in each unit. Right now, you can get an extra $200 - $300 off select Pro's: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=27737
Duo with 1 x 500 GB @ 329.98 US:

Pro Business with 3 x 500 GB @ $1699 less $200 = $1499.00

When I go to that topic I see the questiuon is referrinbg toi the ReadyNas NV+. Does this also apply to the Duo? I want to confirm before I buy it. Thanks. - chirpaLuminaryNV+ and Duo share the same code base. Main difference is 2-bay and 4-bay. You can find a comparison chart of all products here: http://www.readynas.com/?cat=49
- sloth61AspirantI'm trying to create a new VMware datastore on my ReadyNAS Duo. I created a new share on the NAS device called Datastore2 and added my ESX host IP address to the "Root-privileged enabled hosts" list. I'm getting an error message saying "The following hosts do not have NFS access to [Datastore2] and are therefore removed from the root privilege-enabled hosts list". What am I missing???
John - chirpaLuminaryWhat is the IP you are entering? And what browser/firmware are you using?
- sloth61AspirantI used the IP address of my ESX host which is 192.168.1.230. I was able to get around this issue by using one of the shares the ReadyNAS Duo came pre-configured with. It's a share called "backup" and has NFS selected as one of the protocols. I just renamed that share to something more descriptive for what I need (datastore2). My ESX host was then able to connect to this share. But I was unable to create a new share and select the NFS protocol. Why is that??? I would like to be able to do that in case I need to create more NFS shares in the future. Thanks in advance for your help.

NFS service is not enabled by default for new shares. You'll need to manually enable it by clicking on the icon in the NFS column on the Share List page and set up default access.
