WD introduces new, NAS-Specific Hard Drive line

Western Digital has announced a new hard drive line, specifically for NAS use with 1, 2 and 3TB capacities.

The new WD RED line ( http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810 ) has been developed for use in home and SOHO NASes in partnership with the leading SOHO NAS manufacturers.

This way WD gets their product portfolio distributed as follows:

Consumer Grade:

WD Green - Silent, energy saving hard drives.
WD Blue - Regular desktop & mobile computing hard drives
WD Black - Extreme performance desktop & mobile computing hard drives
WD Red - NAS specific use (3 yrs. warranty, 24/7 phone support)

Server/Corporate Grade:

WD RE4 - Server drives

SSD:

WD SiliconDrive

Extreme Computing:

WD VelociRaptor

AV Set-top boxes and Video Streaming servers:

WD AV-GP
WD AV25

The new Red drives have been approved by netgear for the following models already:

ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus RNDP200U
ReadyNAS RNDU4000-100NAS
Pro 6 (6 Bay)
ReadyNAS Duo

You can see this info by going to WD page -> Internal Storage -> NAS and then at the WD Red page click on Compatibility to see approved models from all vendors.

Those two products are very different. Compatibility with Duo v2 tells you nothing about compatibility with the v1 and vice versa.
Very true. Though updates to the v1 lists don't appear to be a priority for Netgear. So not being on the list for the v1 doesn't necessarily mean it won't work.

Using drives that aren't on the HCL will likely result in loss of on-line support though, so I wouldn't move off the HCL without a good reason. I'd pass on the Caviar Greens at this point though, I think you'd be better off taking a risk on the new Reds than going with them.
  • The WD10EFRX is on the list for the NV+ (v1) but not on the list for the Duo (v1). I think that is the only time I have seen a drive on one list but not the other. Also neither list yet lists the WD20EFRX. Hopefully that is an indication that they are in the process of testing it.
  • Just swapped out all my disks in the RNPP for new WD20EFRXs, let's see how it fairs :)

Both drives are listed for both products now.
  • Do you think these (2TB version) will work with the ReadyNAS X6?
