WD My Book Essentials 3TB USB3 Ext HDD and NV+ V2 ??
Hi Guys, originally posted this in the general questions section, but am hoping for more support here, (I'm hoping this is a simple fix i.e. an incorrect setting ?) ?
I've recently purchased a Western Digital My Book essentials 3TB USB3 external HDD. It works fine on my Windows 7 (64bit) PC and I'm able to copy files, delete etc. all at super speed. I installed the supplied WD Quick View software on the PC and all's reported fine. The issue is, I primarily purchased the drive to do a weekly backup from my ReadyNas NV+ V2 drive which is fitted with 2 x 3TB WD Red HDD's (so 3TB storage in total) and running RAIDiator 5.3.6.
Problem is, when I connect the drive to the rear USB3 ports on the NV+ V2, the blue activity light on the top front of the ReadyNas starts blinking, but front view never actually displays the drive. I've left it connected for an hour, and the Nas just keeps blinking like it's trying to connect but actually doesn't seem to. Is this an issue with 3tb external USB3 HDD's or is there a simple fix ? Oh, BTW, the external drive was formatted as NTFS out of the box and I haven't changed anything. The strange thing is, although the drive never appears as a mounted share, when I switch the NV+ V2 off, the display says something like "USB disk disconnected", so the ReadyNas obviously knows it's connected, it just can't display and I'm wondering if the NV+ just can't handle external USB HDD's larger then 2TB ?
I've since tried it on 2 Desktops and 1 laptop (all with USB3 ports), on both their USB2 and USB3 ports, and all see the drive and it's contents no problem at the full 3tb (well 2.72tb formatted), so the problem clearly seems to lie with the ReadyNas ?

- OOM-9NETGEAR ExpertSome things to check when moving the USB drive from your Windows machine to ReadyNAS. When you were removing the drive from the computer, did you safely remove the drive? (or umount the drive from the Windows machine?) I have seen some cases where the USB drive was removed (unsafely) and the USB drive would have a flag to not mount and in some cases mount as read-only.
There is a community USB3.0 drives compatibility list:
