Copy performance of the RN3xx is about 100 mbyte per second with raid 5 (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas- ... l=&start=1)
The RN516 is definitely better if you are needing on-the-fly video transcoding (for instance with plex). That is more about CPU performance than file I/O.
Personally I would go with fewer 3 TB drives (or possibly 4 TB), and leave at least one slot open for future expansion. Expanding into empty slots is more cost-effective than upgrading smaller drives with larger ones.
