Which Ready NAS do I need please?
Hello. I have installed a handful of ReadyNAS products over the years and they have been very good.
I have a client who has the following requirements to serve up to 12 PC's
4TB usable storage. They have about 2TB of data to transfer.
Expandable
Able to back up via the front USB port to 2 x 4TB USB desktop drives which they will rotate each week. Either back up via the front button or a schedule each evening
The last one I supplied was a 6tb twin disk system with 3tb available to use. It was a 102 (2X3TB DS) which is end of life now I believe.
My supplier tells me most of them are diskless now. This will be an end user install so I want to make it as easy as possible for them although I Can remote in if needed. With the diskless models is it just a case of sliding in an appropriate disk and thats it?
The system will be used for large artwork file as well as general office documents.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

- I would recommend you the Intel-based ReadyNAS RN300 series either the RN312 (2-bay) or RN314 (4-bay). You may check the data sheet on this link: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... -RN700.pdf

If not is it a case of installing 2 x 4tb drives into a diskless 2 bay model and thats it? Will the default config be Raid 1 and therefore if you insert 2 x 4TB drives one will be mirrored automatically with 8TB total capacity with 4TB for data?

I believe there is no model that comes with 2x4TB drives. You may check it on this link below:

However, it is possible that you start with a diskless 2-bay model (let say an RN312) then set it up with 2x4TB drives in it. The default config will be XRAID-RAID1 since there are 2x4TB drives in it. It means that the data is mirrored to each drive resulting to allow one-drive failure. Since its XRAID, if you decide to replace a faulty drive or replace one of the drives with a higher capacity, then you will just simply hot-swap it and it should proceed with the resync process automatically.

But I wouldn't choose it for a client who potentially needs 12 simultaneous users.- Ixa is right, better go with RN312 for 2-bay NAS.
There is no available kit that comes with 2x4TB, but you can get a diskless RN312 then insert 4TB disks. Just make sure you get a compatible disks, see http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641/~/hardware-compatibility-list-hard-disks. RN312 is also compatible with one brand and make 6TB disk which is WD RED WD60EFRX. RN312 has 2GB RAM while the RN102 (not EOL) is just 512MB, so RN312 is way better for business use.
When it comes to RAID config, all ReadyNAS but default use XRAID, since RN312 is a 2-bay NAS, it only uses RAID1 for XRAID, switching to FlexRAID will allow you to use RAID 0 and/or JBOD. - If you are looking at total cost of ownership, a 4 bay unit might be a better buy (leaving 2 bays for expansion). The LCD also helps troubleshooting a bit.

If we go for a diskless 312 and two 4tb drives from the compatible list when the client sets it up is it just a case of inserting the disks and powering up the system? Will it all be self configuring? The units I have set up in the past that came with disks installed were really simple to set up.
My main concern is that the client is reasonably capable but they are end users and I will be away in Europe when they are setting it up and not able to get on site.
Ive not set one up myself before where the disks were purchased separately so I am a little concerned about supplying my client with something new which I may struggle to support if I am not there.
I think you mean the ReadyNAS, not the drives. You can do scheduled backup to USB. They will come right up, but they will be using the default ReadyNAS settings. There will need to additional set up (likely the same stuff that you've set up in the past).
