Which should I get

I am close to buying my first nas I just don't know which one. What I am going to use it for is mainly for backup my pictures and videos and stream them to my tv.
Alot of my videos are blue ray iso files that would need to be transfered and recoded on the fly so I can watch them without no studder.Any Help would be great and thanks in advance.

  • my suggestion : if u plan on re-encoding on the fly - Ready Nas Ultra 4 PLus ( or ultra 2 depending on the size of ur library )

Great network speed - snappy daul-core processor that sofar has handled every thing ive thrown at it ... an im by no means a casual user lol and upgradeable ram .... so when u do go crazy and dive into the community of addons , u can upgrade ram accordingly ...

runs plex server great also ..... ( re encodes on fly and streams over the interwebs) i use it to let my mom watch my video library from her home and she is computer NO .... not even just illiterate just NO lol

Are you (plex) transcoding your videos from bluray to some lower def format or streaming the ripped format directly? It was my impression from other forums that the dual core of the pro 6 is the best at transcoding. The difference in price if the disk less systems is enought to buy a drive or 2.

    Thanks.

Yes, if you need transcoding going with the Pro 6 (RNDP6000-200) is the way to go.
  • It is transcoding but mine are already encoded in 720 p or 1080 format from br-d u might need more power ... my rips transcode fine but direct from disk i assume needs more poower.

Even that transcoding run the drive at around 63 percent that's just about the breaking point before I start having issues with other apps running on the drive

I encode mines just for space sake lol ill try a disk tonight tho

It depends what you need to transcode from and too. The closer the quality of the pre-encoded videos to what your device will play the less power your likely to need. As newer devices get more powerful and internet and wireless speeds improve (and also internet quotas) one can expect that a less powerful device will be needed to transcode the same quality video.
