Win11 24H2 and ReadyNAS

What did Microsoft do this time...?

I allowed my Win11 Plex server to update to 24H2 today, and now it can't get to my ReadyNAS104. Firmware 6.10.10.

I can get to it just fine with my desktop Win11, 23H2. I will not be updating this PC until this is resolved.

I'm in the process of backing out 24H2 on the Plex server and looking for advice on how to proceed, as I suspect Microsoft has added something to this major version that is breaking this.

Can you access the NAS from Windows File Explorer?

If not, do these commands (from CMD) work?

    net use * /d /y

    net use z: \\nas-ip-address\sharename u:admin nas-admin-password

using the real NAS IP address, admin password, and a real sharename of course.

  • "Can't get in" in what way?  Can't load the UI?  Can't access files via SMB?  Or just a Plex issue? Does it show up in RAIDar?

I just updated a VM to 24H2 and I have no problem accessing my NAS.  I do have SMBPlus installed, but do not have SMB signing enabled.  I'll have to see if I have a sandbox NAS without SMBPlus (I typically install it by default).

  • I spooled up a pair of VMs with 24H2.  One was a fresh install. One, an "upgrade" from 23H2.  Neither one could connect to my Duo V1 nor my WD EX4.  SMB Plus isn't an option on either one.  Note the 23H2 could prior to the upgrade.

Disabling the SMB Client signing requirement and disabling the guest fallback protection seems to have done the trick.

I know this is not "optimal" but both NAS's exist only on my local network with no external access. The only "solution" according to MS is: "Replace your NAS if you cannot upgrade your NAS software to support signing and credentials"

    The MS note:

    https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/filecab/accessing-a-third-party-nas-with-smb-in-windows-11-24h2-may-fail/4154300

Haven't gotten the prompt yet to upgrade my "real" 23H2.

Microsoft began deprecating SMB 1 back in 2014, and there were steps needed to get it to work with Windows 10 and 11 before - so not a big surprise.

It is good to get the method to keep it working with 24H2 though.

FTP and NFS should both still work (though NFS requires Windows Professional or a third party software stack).

You're right on.  I had to add SMB1 on the fresh install.  It was already installed on my "update" install.  Fortunately, MS still "supports" it.
