End-of-Life Announcement for ReadyNAS Photos I
The ReadyNAS Photos I service, often referred as ReadyNAS Photos, the first generation of Photos sharing service for the ReadyNAS will be discontinued as of March 31, 2012. Many of you have enjoyed sharing photos straight from your ReadyNAS, and we continue to innovate and develop more advanced features in ReadyNAS Photos II, the follow-on to ReadyNAS Photos.
For those of you who are using ReadyNAS Photos on a ReadyNAS x86-based product (i.e. Ultra, Pro, NVX), you can migrate your ReadyNAS Photos data to Photos II. For those on ReadyNAS Duo and NV+ (v1, Sparc-based) systems, we will provide a means to migrate your Photos data to a ReadyNAS Duo v2 or NV+ v2 or any of the x86-based ReadyNAS. We are also working with ReadyNAS community developers to come up with an alternative photo sharing solution.
We apologize for any inconvenience to you.
Sincerely,
The ReadyNAS Team

- jpvAspirantThe announcement says: "For those on ReadyNAS Duo and NV+ (v1, Sparc-based) systems, we will provide a means to migrate your Photos data to a ReadyNAS Duo v2 or NV+ v2 or any of the x86-based ReadyNAS".
Does this mean that I, as a ReadyNAS NV+ owner, can you ReadyNAS Photos only if I replace my ReadyNAS NV+ by a ReadyNAS NV+ v2?
That seems a little strange to me...
Why is it not at least possible to have the current software available? If I understand correctly, then my ReadyNAS is getting useless for the Photos add-in. - ggorman1AspirantThis is complete rubbish! I had considered a similar product from Apple, but the ReadyNAS Duo promised a lot as a product and I had considered NETGEAR to be a top brand. Now a really basic feature for home usage has been buggered on this platform. It is not good enough to just blame it on the third party. The ReadyNAS Duo is your product, you advertised it with this features and then you remove these features within months of me buying the product. The only reason you are sticking to the "it's not our fault" line is because you don't want a stampede of people asking for their money back. But by all means ignore your customer base and tell them to post their moan elsewhere :slap:
And to make it bloody worse, then you click on "Install ReadyNAS Photos" from "Services->Installed add-ons" it takes me to http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=61 which does nothing to warn me that I'm wasting my time with the Duo. Instead when I click on the download URL http://www.readynasphotos.com/cas/install/ReadyNASPhotosInstallerWithJava.exe it brings me to a "Not Found" and then for a real laugh I navigate to http://www.readynasphotos.com/ I get the message:
"It works!
This is the default web page for this server.
The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet."
:hammer: - ggorman1AspirantI'm completely behind jpv's comment. The quote is accurate and his suggestion about keeping at least the old software available is completely reasonable.
- pugilaresAspirantI agree with you that the way ReadyNAS Photos for Duo (v1) has been discontinued is pretty lazy. There should be proper announcement behind the link from Frontview and also explanation how to get the same or better result nowadays without ReadyNas Photos for Duo (v1).
All right - so what is the solution now? You can go for something like simpleviewer or any other of many similar tools available for free or for cheap nowadays. Some photo-editing software packages have also built-in tools to create web galleries with many patterns to choose from (e.g. Adobe Lightroom TM). So you create gallery with your preferred tool and you place it in the folder on your ReadyNas Duo (v1) which you made accessible from the web through http and that's it. Then you just email the link to your friends/family/clients.
Personally I prefer this way than ReadyNas Photos. - ggorman1AspirantThat's a useful tip - many thanks.
