Hi all, I am also having problems with passwords and the recovery not working. I noted that re-installing the OS may overcome this problem but am paranoid of losing my data! If I were to remove the disk array and install a new single disk for functionality, re-install the OS and then re-insert the original disk array, would the original data of the array still be available?

then you would accomplish precisely nothing. The OS and all the settings (including passwords) are on the disks.
The OS-reinstall is data-safe. It will
- reset the network configuration to use DHCP with no bonding
- turn off volume quota (which can be re-enabled on the volume settings wheel)
- reset your admin password to password.
