finally making some progress with ReadyNas Photos (for my Duo):
some general overall questions:
1) do I need to setup my backup scripts to backup all my photos to the media/Pictures/usrname in order to make use of RNPhotos?
If the original photos are not in media/Pictures, ReadyNAS Photos will make a copy of the pictures in media/Pictures/username directory. Changing your backup scripts to backup in media/Pictures (no need of username) would eliminate this duplication.

2) will the RNPhoto setup be faster if I resize the photos ahead of time? if so, what are the max parameters to streamline this whole process?
Could elaborate what you mean by "RNPhoto setup"? Is it installing the software or importing the pictures? Which directory are you importing the pictures from right now: from a directory on the NAS or the one on PC?

3) are the photos in media/Pictures/usrname modified in any way when RNPhotos processes, or are the processed photos kept elsewhere?
The photos in media/Pictures/username are same as the original pictures, they are not modified in terms of quality or size. However, if these files are writable (which they are by default), then when you set the title or description on the photos, the IPTC block in the file is updated with the new title/desc. Saving the IPTC title/desc in the file means that you do not need to set the title/desc again when you use other IPTC aware s/w like picasa or upload to flickr.
