There is a very specific procedure for the conversion to OS6, it's not just a normal update. It reformats the drives, so you'll need to backup and restore everything. While still old, it's far newer than the 4.2.31 you're currently running and it will eliminate some issues with accessing the NAS caused by OS 4.2 only supporting TLS 1.1 and SMB1. Whether the ReadyDLNA that's a part of 4.2.31 is also now too out of date, I do not know -- I don't use DLNA. But OS6 would definitely have a newer version of that, too.
Your NAS also has a rather slow processor. While it can still run OS6, it will run better with an upgrade. That will probably require a BIOS update, too, based on the age of your unit. Your NAS, unless you've already upgraded, has a Pentium Dual E2160 @ 1.80GHz. It can handle a Core2 Duo E7600 @ 3.06GHz with the latest BIOS. That's not a speed demon by today's standard, but it's a huge improvement. And these days, they are really cheap on eBay. If you plan to upgrade to OS6, be sure to update the BIOS first. There is an easy add-on to do so in OS4.2.x, but it's a pain with OS6.
The details for all of this can be found by searching the forum.

Thanks Sandshark!
I'm going to take some baby steps here recommended by StephenB, and update at least the RAM, and update the x86 firmware and then to OS6. Appreciate the tip on updating the BIOS before installing OS6, I will look up how to deal with the BIOS.
