ReadyNAS Ultra 4 and apt-get

Please tell me I haven't just made a huge mistake and bought the wrong RN. I went for the Ultra 4 because I liked most of its features - RAM, 2 ethernet ports etc. But just picked it up and starting to set up and reading this website, it appears the apt-get addon is only for SPARC processors? Doesn't work on the INTEL ones like this Ultra 4? Had a bit of a search around and couldn't find posts here on it, but looking at the download for the apt-get addon there's only a SPARC binary. :(

    APT is pre-installed on the x86 (Intel) devices (e.g. NVX, Ultra, Pro), that's why there's no add-on. Install the EnableRootSSH add-on and you'll be able to SSH in as 'root' and do an

    apt-get update && apt-get install build-essential
  • *phew* Thanks so much for the quick reply!

    Haven't been able to check, because it's doing a huge resync of 2TB drive and I can't reboot it for the SSH access install. Will have to wait til tomorrow now.

    Very relieved, though. Thanks.

    You're welcome.

    Just be sure not to do an "apt-get upgrade" as this will break the Frontview web-interface and probably other things as well. Where possible I would recommend using community add-ons.
  • Ok, thanks for the tip. I'm a long time Ubuntu user, and do use "apt-get upgrade" a fair bit, along with "unattended-upgrades" etc.

    So I'm intending to install a few servers like postfix, amavisd-new, clamav, dovecot, dnsmasq, iptables, squid, spamassassin, apache etc. It's only for a family home server, not many users. Do I have to keep them up to date manually? Or should I configure apt to not upgrade certain packages so that Frontview doesn't break? If so, what packages? If not, what do you recommend I do? I didn't see addons for all of those services, and the ones I did see didn't appear to be the latest versions.

    I would install the things you want manually. The list of things that shouldn't be upgraded may change from one firmware version to another.

    A key advantage of addons is that they generally can be easily removed.
  • Was just trying to get git running on my readynas ultra 4. But encounters this error.
