A little update:
I just checked another computer (which has not yet forced me to upgrade the ReadyNAS Remote client software) and on that computer the NETGEAR Firewall Driver is installed for the LAN connection too, so I spoke incorrectly when I assumed that it should NOT be installed for the Local Area Connection. This does not, however, answer the question as to what has changed in the install process of this new version of Remote that causes a conflict with the other network adapter.
The NETGEAR Firewall Driver is the same version on both computers: 6.0.1.41(08/11/2010). So I am guessing that the problem is not with this driver itself, but in something else.
I am guessing that disabling the driver in the LAN connection may contribute to the Remote software no longer working, but until I find another way to still have my network connection work I am not going to re-inable that driver.
