Transmission 2.42 ReadyNas Duo watch-dir fails
Hi All,
tranmission back in version 2.16 watch-dir used to work in the settings.json file in all the versions to date it never ever works when i edit the file
according to transmission and its original source code should be either true or false. but in the latest versions it always as below:
"watch-dir-enabled": 0
if i simply change the watch directory to where i want it to watch and leave "watch-dir-enabled": 0 as is eg:
"watch-dir": "/c/Torrent_Media/Pointers",
"watch-dir-enabled": 0
it never ever sees the torrents nor does it ever start the download.
Ive tried to change the "0" value to 1 but then the service starts to fail and not start etc. ive also changed it true and false to keep in line with the tranmission original source code.
everything else so far - over the last hour is working ok but I cant get the watch folder to work, can anyone help me or tell me what im doing wronf or provide a working copy of their setting.json file for me?
if this doesnt work i think im finally going to get rid of the nas and buy a micro server lol
thanks

- JarnoGGuideI just tested my settings and they are working fine (in 2.52 on an Ultra 2). I've got
"watch-dir": "/c/media/BitTorrent/New",
"watch-dir-enabled": 1
}
Not sure if they changed anything between 2.42 and 2.52 about the watch dir. Also, make sure that Transmission has the right permissions to your watch dir. - nasaus1AspirantWhen you say permissions can u be more spefic. I know it can write a torrent to the download dir the change it from .part to its correct extension and movie it to the correct folder.
- JarnoGGuideIt needs at least read and write permissions for the watch dir as well (so not just for the download dir). It needs to read the torrent files you put there and it then renames them from *.torrent to *.torrent.added (or something like that).
- nasaus1AspirantOk so I have to set up a user name that matchs transmission eg user1 in the NAS (frontend) and user1 in transmission both with the same password to get it to read the directory that way it will auto from the watch dir ?
- JarnoGGuideNo, Transmission is run as the user "nobody" from the group "nogroup". You will have to set the permissions for that user. You are using a share called "Torrent_Media". The easiest way to get Transmission working properly with that is to go to the share listing in Frontview and go to the Advanced Options tab in the settings window of the share. There you can type in the owner and group of the share folder. This should be "nobody" (without "") for the owner and "nogroup" (without "") for the group. Select the box in front of the line saying "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share......." and press the apply button.
- nasaus1AspirantTried it as you said and Torrent_Media is now aetup with nobody and nogroup but still not seeing anything :( I also tried to changed "watch-dir-enabled": 1 and "watch-dir-enabled": 0 but that did nothing.
- JarnoGGuideA few checks:
- does the folder already exist? (including use of capitals)
- do the torrent files you are trying with, work when added manually?
- does manually adding a (any) torrent work fine, including the downloading?
Transmission adds some errors it encounters to daemon.log and system.log. I'm not sure if errors on adding torrents are shown there though. To find these files, you will have to download the system logs. You can find those by going to Frontview->Status->Logs and click "Download All Logs" at the top right. - nasaus1Aspirantyes folder exists and is correct spelling and captials etc
when i add them manually from interface works no issues
downloads no issue - torrent gets change to .part trashes the original torrent then when download complete puts it in the downloads folder.
what should i be looking for in the logs? i dont see any error or entries to do with watch dir or errors on torrnets, but there is lots and lots of log entereies. - JarnoGGuideYou will have to look for lines with "transmission-daemon" in it. You can try to put a (bunch of) torrents in the watch dir, wait a few minutes (to let Transmission do whatever it wants) and download the log then. That way you know the time you have to look for as well.
- nasaus1AspirantCan you paste a copy of all your code from your setting.json file? Just want to compare. Thanks
