TwonkyMedia and ReadyNAS Ultra or Ultra Pro

I have a friend who is looking for a 4-Bay ReadyNAS unit. He has a collection of MKV files (all 1080i or 1080p) and wishes to transcode them for his Xbox 360 & PS3.

He would like to get the Netgear RND4000 but is unsure if it will stream to either the PS3 or Xbox 360 without any stalling. Will it cope or would he be better off getting the more expensive RNDP400U?

In most cases it will only be streaming to one or the other, not both. If there is an issue streaming to both at the same time, this he can deal with.

Also, would it help it he were to upgrade the memory from the standard 1GB?

Thank you.

  • I don't think hardware matters in this case.
trying to stream mkv to my ps3 out of ultra2, getting "unsupported data".
if i use my win7 pc as a client -- it works just fine.
was reading twonky support forums (http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10707), looks like they broke mkv streaming in 7.0.7.
but there is newer version available, 7.0.8.
tried to find any manuals how to build .bin out of .zip provided by twonky, no luck.
  • Thank you igchy, but from my understanding TwonkyMedia converts (or Transcodes) the video to something that is able to be played on the PS3 & Xbox. Therefore the Laptop would not be required.

Since it is converting the stream as the PS3 or Xbox is playing it, I am concerned about how much processing power this requires. My friend has both an Xbox and a PS3. His daughter has one, he has the other, so there is potential for them both watching something at the same time in different rooms.
