What add ons do I need to run XBMC?

I have been using Plex which I like but i'm having issues with the iPad and no support being offerd. I was thinking about trying XBMC next to stream all of my media. Sorry if the following questions seem very basic but i'm very new to the Nas world. I'm running an Ultra 2+

Are there add on's to serve XBMC?
Can I only install add on's from readynas website?

  • As far as I know, XBMC is media player software. This means that your iPad would have to run an XBMC add-on, not your NAS.

All ReadyNAS systems have a build-in DLNA server which works which is automatically recognized by any XBMC media player as long as you are on the same network (ie. in your house). To enable the DLNA server on your NAS, log in on Frontview, in the menu go to "Services" and then to "Streaming Services". Make sure the tickbox in front of "ReadyDLNA" is ticked, select which share(s) should be available and press the apply-button.

Apple prefers that you use their stuff, so your iPad can probably not stream media from the build-in DLNA server on your NAS without extra software on your iPad.

About add-ons in general: there are a lot of add-ons available both from Netgear as from the community here on the forum. You can also make your own add-ons, I think there are some manuals for that on the forum.
  • I have a XBMC app for the iPad. I can't seem to get it to find any media on my Nas. I was thinking it would be simular to plex where you would need to run a server on the Nas.

Can I install any Linux based server or does it need to be Readynas specific?

Nope, there is no 'xbmc server' like there is for plex.
  • So all I need to do is enable DLNA on my Nas and XBMC should see all of my media?

Are there any add ons that work with XBMC?

    Thanks
  • xbmc does not need any addons, and while it can use dlna, it is better to simply 'add a source' and point the source to the nas ip/hostname and whichever share(s) have the media.

I would suggest you try out xbmc on your PC, figure out how to get it working with your nas, then set it up the same way on the ipad.
  • Thanks for your help.

Downloading for my PC as I type : )
