1 iscsi target | 2 workstations | data out of sync

hello,

i have a weird isssue and need some help. i have two laptops . both accessing the same iscsi target / folder.

if i copy a folder (example music album with mp3 files) from my laptop to the iscsi folder (readynas) it shows up fine. but when i go to find that same folder fro mthe other laptop it's not there? any ideas? does iscsi need time to refresh all clients who access it? how does it work. is something wrong with my nas?

  • iscsi is not designed for multiple access to a single target.
it would be like connecting a usb drive to multiple computers, they can over-write each others data and you get corrupted files
  • Will it eventually update over time? is the folder i transferred from workstation A ever going to be visible from workstation B ?
  • more likely its corrupted since 2 computers cannot update the filesystem at the same time.
  • so what your saying is that if i want to access the NAS via iscsi from 2 workstations i will only be able to upload files from one.

would it be better to use SMB file share ??

essentially yes, as already stated, iscsi is like locally attached storage (ie usb drive), you can't use an external drive with 2 computers at the same time, nor can you use iscsi with multiple computers at the same time (except under some specific circumstances generally involving virtualization and/or clustering).

would it be better to use SMB file share ??

yes, this is what smb shares are for, ie network storage.

iscsi is simulated local storage (ie a fake local hard drive), not networked storage.

i suggest you wiki and/or google iscsi to learn more about it to clear up any further confusion

    edit fixed bold above
  • thanks my next question.

how would i transfer my data from my iscsi mapped drive to an smb mapped drive?

iscsi shares are hidden . wshould i do a robocopy or something from iscsi volume to smb file share? what do you suggest?
  • iscsi stored on the readynas is not a share, its a giant file that contains an image of the filesystem that you formatted when you attached your pc(s), ie likely NTFS.

in order to get data off the iscsi, you would have to connect to the iscsi volume with one of the PC's and copy it back to an SMB share on the readynas (or any other location).

there is no way to locally copy to/from the iscsi to a regular nas share, it has to go over the network via pc/mac.

you can use robocopy or drag/drop or whatever, but it will be done from the pc
  • As mentioned, you are using iSCSI for the wrong reason. For what you want, you should be using CIFS shares.

Why did you choose to use iSCSI originally?
  • i get way better performance using iscsi. i switched it back to cifs and now i have to wait for the share to load up everytime. with iscsi i didnt. also streaming 1080p video from compressed rar files using vlc is choppy now. with iscsi it is smooth.

Well mount the iscsi target on just one machine and try sharing the files from there and see if that works any better.
