2120 + vmware Proliant + 1Gb/s switch = poor performance

Hi.
Bought 2120. Added to network (Netgear GSM7224). First interface - for manage, the second - for storage network (dedicated VLAN with dedicated vmware interface). We have Windows 2003 server as guest OS. VMWare version is 5.0 ESXi. Add storage as NFS to eliminate expansion problem. The Windows server is on the local disks and we added additional disk for backup and other purposes from Netgear storage. And try to make backup on it, and very sad. Because 82.000.000 bytes copied for 10,5 hours. We have LOW BUDGET Synology with 2 disks in the network. It's much better! Why? We have RAID5 (all disks are 7200 RPM RaidEdition Western Digital).
What is the way to speedup storage.

P.S. The management interface is bad. Interface programmers are stupid. Looks like Windows 8 interface... Cant copy any information from popup windows. Why people make this sh...t. We are technicians. Not glamourous little girls...

Download the logs and unzip the zip file. What are the contents of initrd.log?
  • [2013/09/23 13:35:58] Factory default initiated due to new disks (no RAID, no partitions)!
    [2013/09/23 13:36:16] Defaulting to X-RAID2 mode, RAID level 5

What are your NFS settings? How many NFS threads? Is NFSv4 disabled or enabled?

Have you checked to see if that thread count is appropriate for your setup?

Does ESXi 5 support NFS v4?

Do you use the NAS for other purposes?

What is the status of your volume?
  • 1. I found, that VMWare 5 still support only NFS v3.
    2. I do not use NAS for other loads. Only for VMWare. And use dedicated NICs (VMWare and LAN2 from NAS).
    3. The status of disk is ok.

I tied to use iscsi connection (through VMWare) instead of NFS. The result is worst. Tried to defragment Exchange database on server and iscsi disk was lost (to long timeout). Tried to times - allways server lost disk and I needed to power off unconditionally.

Try contacting support (call if within 90 days of purchase, otherwise make an Online Submission).

What brand and model disks are installed?
  • We are using Western Digital WD2003FYYS. Such disks are in the compatibility list.
Still slow performance, when I use NFS.
I understand, that 2120 is entry level, but we are using only ONE vmware host and only ONE guest OS. It seems to me Netgear testers should be fired.
Will try support and inform forum.

    Hi itprofservice,
Do you enable async in advanced when you enabled NFS Network Acess on the Share?
I checked SynologyDX1513+(x86), Netgear RN316(same CPU and memory as DX1513+) and RN2120(arm), they are mounted ESXi 5.1 via NFS.
ESXI 5.1 local datastore has a disk only,
Copy a 50GB file from local datasotre to NFS datastore.,
Synology DX1513+ and RN316 need about 10 minutes,
    RN2120 needs about 12 minutes.
