6.4.0 update and USB disks

I have updated to v6.4.0 on my 104's and a number of file issues have cropped up with t usb discs attcahed

upon the reboot the disk names have all changed ie from USB_HDD_1 to xxx_xxx_3 or more. This is not really an issue . By previously editing  the storage.conf file in \etc\frontview\usb that this holds the usb name/details.  In 6.4.0 this is now in a file called usb_map in the same directory.

The usb discs are formatted NTFS and but the logs/messages state that the RN104 does not recognise them but it actually does.  So for safety sake plugged into the native formatting system, windows computer, ran chkdsk which indicated no issues, plugged back in to RN104, still get the  same message however the files can be read and written to as before.

But when moving or copying  a file on windows  from directory to directory on the RN104 using samba  the message comes up, regardless of file size that "the file ..name of file.. is too large for the destination file system". As I said it does not matter how smalll the file is. I have tried it with a blank txt file and a fille over 4GB.

It seems that you can write any file size but not move or copy

When when you create the file in the specific directory it is ok!

All permissions are ok.

I have just tried moving/copying using the windows program terabyte. Strangely this works! so it is a window issue with the "native" netgear samba/usb system?

I should add that I just tried this workaround and there was no option to reset permissions on the USB share. In fact, there are no options under File Access at all and probably as a result of that, it doesn't work.

Whilst I was unable to find a way to reset permissions as per the instructions I was given in the thread to which I linked, and unable to enable Guest Access, per se, I just searched through the settings and found 'Allow anonymous access' which has got rid of the previous USB ID; it just remains to be seen if the backup to it is successful with the new ID I had an e-mail this morning stating that it had failed.

  • It seems that this is a general issue from the number of posts on this subject

Firmware 6.4.0 and USB is causing issues with name changes and recognising files systems  whether it be NTFS or EXT4.  It is clear that the code has been rewritten as usb disk names are now held/written to a different file "usb_map" so once this area of code is analysed by Netgear and they sort out the issues we may get to a solution
