I wonder how expensive those new enterprise drives are?

Maybe if you have to ask you can't afford them... :D

I'm just curious. Yes they would be way out of my budget.
  • Cost will probably be good per GB. The magnetic media vendors see their future in low cost and high capacity since SSDs are stealing performance and lower capacity quadrants.

But yikes, it's seven platters. I'd be wary of these until we see some long term reliability results.

These are enterprise drives, and the various announcements use the word "premium". I don't think it likely that cost/gigabyte will be lower than WDC Red or Seagate NAS drives.

Given that these are now supposed to be available, it is odd that there is no on-line pricing information.

Well the 4TB Ultrastar is $349.99 USD at NewEgg, so one would think the 6TB will be a fair bit more than that.
  • Ok so cheap is relative :-). But really enterprise SAS drives are still in the $400 price range for 900GB. In the enterprise class I'm thinking this will probably be a good price/capacity. The whole 7 platter hermetically sealed helium filled enclosure sounds a little fragile to me, but maybe they've made some breakthroughs.
