Accessing ReadyNAS Outside of Network

What about security though? How secure am I on that network? It's obviously restricted to students/staff, but there's no actual encryption (Unless that first login is a different form of encryption?). How visible/vulnerable am I on that network? I have Zone Alarm free installed-is that enough? Should I be doing more?
I think if you have no security on your computer than you may loss your data when you are away from the computer.And also may your security devices that are installed with your system will hacked and you have to face any loss.
