Adding in a 10Gbe card to 315 or 516....

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience testing out a 10Gbe in a 316 or 516?

I saw an old post from 2 years ago about doing this in a 3200. There's a line in boot_info.log that has a variable noting if the NAS came with 10Gbe or not. If it didn't then no luck in adding a card.

Was wondering if this is the case in OS 6.2 as well?

My purpose for this is to have 10Gbe direct connection between my current 316 and another 316 or 516 that I will be purchasing soon and I'd like to have as fast as possible a connection between them. I don't want to have to go out and get a switch that supports LACP. I just want 10Gbe between two NAS's

Not sure whether there is a slot or not to add a riser card to on the 316 or not. For the 516 a user purchased this. Note that doing a change like this would void the warranty.

Also note the RN716X comes with a 10GbE card. You may wish to consider purchasing a RN716X.

Yeah...I'd get a 716 if the damn thing didn't cost $3200 plus because it's loaded with drives...
huh? Your link (for the 716x, not the 716) is diskless.

Though I agree that they should sell some accessories/spare parts. Disk trays+screws for sure. PSUs/Power bricks and maybe some parts.
  • AH...didn't catch that.....but still...$3200 for diskless....that's even worse!

I would not expect to pay more than $1500 for a diskless 716 as I could buy most of the parts to make something similar for about that price
  • Well, to be fair, you're paying for something engineered, warrented, supported, and updated with very specific features on top of the total sum of the metal and chips. This price does seem a little out of line, though. That said, the 516 was sold with Netgear promising an upgrade path to 10g "soon". It's sounding like the 10g official upgrade path for the 516 is $3200.

  • Just wanted to reiterate a few points:

Netgear did indeed promise an upgrade path to 10g for the 516. Netgear broke that promise.

You are paying for more than the hardware; it's an engineered solution. Search here for hanging problems with 6.2.x and draw your own conclusions.

I have a 516 with a 10g card, but 6.2.x is so unstable it's hard to quantify any benefit.

A pc case, mobo, hardware raid, 10g, cpu, ssd boot drive, and 6 drives for about half the price of my readynas. With linux it's solid and fast.

6.2.x is stable and I ran it on my 516 for quite a while till I decided to run 6.3.x

The 100 series lockup thread is a separate issue and is not what you're seeing.

I would like to see if 6.2.3 helps you or if the improved logging in 6.2.3 gives some clues as to what is happening on your system.
