All of a sudden - Read Only access via Mac

My NV+ has been performing very well. I use an Ubuntu laptop to access it (smb) , and my wife uses a Mac. (cif/smb)

We each have a user account and want all the files in Shared Files to be fully accessible to both accounts.

Recently, rather out of the blue, the Mac is no longer about to create folders/write files. We upgraded the Mac OS, and then it wasn't able to connect at all. The upgraded the NAS firmware to the latest version a few days ago, and now we're back to the same place of the Mac not being able to write. On the Mac, I've tested with my user account and it is also read-only.

On my Ubuntu laptop, we have read-write access no problems.

It's relatively urgent and I logged a call with support 36h ago (case 16953753), but I haven't even had a reply yet. I'm guessing they're quite busy. I've sent my full logs to the email address specified (btw ewok - the 'send logs' link in your sig is out of date)

I'm a n00b when it comes to working via command line, but can follow instructions. What other information can I collect to help troubleshoot this, please?

thanks all.

Try creating files from Mac using your NAS account (I was unsure of which user account your were referring to when you wrote "I've tested with my user account and it is also read-only".
  • Ah yes - should have explained that better.

When using my NAS account on the Mac (where it's normally connected as my wife), I can 'connect as' myself no problem. But still only have read-only access. This makes me think it's something specific to how the NAS is talking to the Mac as opposed to a file permission setting error.

ps I've just resent the logs as you had asked on the other thread. I'll keep this problem to this thread from now on if that's best.
  • Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to resolve this, please?
  • mac os x 10.7.2 ?
i've heard of some Apple magic around SMB/CIFS implementation and i'm still on os 10.7.1

So the exact same NAS account is being used on the Mac and the Linux PC and only one has a read-only issue. That's strange. Is this issue restricted to only one share? Can you try creating a new share as a test and seeing if it exhibits the same behavior?
  • Good news - it's been resolved!

The case I logged with tech support is closed now. If anyone else finds this thread in future and is wondering how we solved it, the steps are:

    Configuring Advance CIFS Permissions:
    1. Go to Share listings
    2. Click Cifs icon of the specific share name
    3. Scroll down and put a check on "Automatically set permissions on new files and folders" under Advance CIFS Permissions and click on apply.
    4. Then go to Advance Options tab
    5. Share folder owner: (type the share name)
    6. Share folder group: (nogroup)
    7. Put a check on "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings" and click Apply.

P.S. After you put a click on the Apply button the check will disappear inside the check box, it's normal because it's an action box.

Thanks to Reinhard at Netgear for the helpful solution. I don't fully understand the security implications of the changing the Shared_Files owner in nogroup to give Group & Everyone read/write, but since the NAS is on a private network I presume it is OK. If anyone has a link to a thread that explains any risks I might be exposed to and how to mitigate them I'd be grateful.

A caveat - this solution worked for me, in my situation and was provided on the basis of my log files. It might not fix your problem ;-)
