Almost dead duo v1 after taking a dive off the desk...

My ReadyNas Duo v1 usually resides somewhere safe, but while re-flooring the home office it got parked on my desk. Yup, it got knocked off and hit the new wood floor with a sickening thump. It now boots up with two long flashes which indicates no drives found. It gets an IP address from the router but also no longer responds to any http access. I tries the 5 second reset reboot, but no difference. I suspect the chassis is trashed.

On the positive side, I downloaded WD Lifeguard software and amazingly it passed my 2 x 2Tb drives as OK :)

I'm left thinking that if I get another Duo v1 then I can put the drives into that and all is well in my world? Yes? (please! my backup isn't as current as I'd like)

Assuming that's a good plan, I have one snag... I didn't mark the drives as I took them out, so it's a 50/50 chance I'd put them back correctly. Is there a way to tell?

Any other things I need to consider? I've read I need to make sure that Radiator is the same revision as the one I was using. I'm planning on buying second hand, so can I update that without drives inserted?

TIA for any guidance you can offer.

John

You can also get the data off the drives with a windows PC using linux reader (http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/). It will only see the data partition on disk 1 (not disk 2) - however since both disks are intact you should be ok.

I'd suggest doing that, and buying a new NAS (instead of a used v1 chassis). Even if you decide to go used, I'd still pull the data off with linux reader.
  • That's brilliant news Stephen! I'll have a go pulling off the data this evening.

That opens up the possibilities for a replacement NAS :) Although I must say the Duo v1 has been a pretty good performer over the past 4 years or so.

My duo is still running nicely, but it is much slower than the newer entry level models, and of course is limited to 2 TB drives.
  • My situation worsened. I've not been in a position to get data off my drives (yet).

Mounting each of my drives in an external SATA case I get one which keeps its red light on, and one which goes green but after what sounds like 3 head retries. I guess one is dead, the other possibly readable.

After a few tries, I managed to get my pc to recognise and mount one of them, and rlinux saw that as "\\.\PhysicalDrive1" and Target ID 2" (SCSI Address). However it said it was zero size when I tried to get the read/explore the data. Does that mean I was looking at disk2 which has no partition info? If so, is there any other way to get at the data on disk2?

The other thing is that I managed to revive my Duo v1 by doing a factory reset and reinstalling using an old couple of small SATA drives. I also restored a backup of the settings that I had. So, I think I have a working NAS again.

I've bought a replacement drive (WD20EARX) which should arrive soon. The question is, is it possible to mount the "suspect" drive into the now working NAS and see if it's bootable? Is that safe? Does it matter which bay? Should it be bootable with a single drive?

If that were to succeed (although somehow I'm doubting it) then presumably I would hot insert the new disk and it would sync itself.

Loads of questions! Thanks in advance for your help.
