Available apps is empty

Look at post 37.
That mod in that discussion thread won't populate the apps screen, but it is needed to install anything that needs a new library from the debian repository.
Once you have that done, it is possible to manually download the apps and install them.
FYI, most of the third-party apps are rather old and were never maintained. One exception is plex (which should be downloaded directly from plex.tv).

You don't need nano if you follow the steps in post 37. All you need to do is download the files to the NAS, and then copy them into the /etc/apt folder. Then run apt-get update.
