Available apps is empty

That mod in that discussion thread won't populate the apps screen, but it is needed to install anything that needs a new library from the debian repository.
Once you have that done, it is possible to manually download the apps and install them.
FYI, most of the third-party apps are rather old and were never maintained. One exception is plex (which should be downloaded directly from plex.tv).
