Backing up a partition on an external USB WD My Book to ReadyNAS 202

I am attempting to set up a back schedule from a partition on a 3TB external WD My book to a chosen share on ReadyNAS 202.  Every time I attempt to complete the Remote system section I get the same error message whe testing the connection.

The external drive is connected to a Macbook Pro via USB and I can access the ReadNAS over the wifi network so the solution I want is to back up one of the partitions on the WD My book as it is to big for a timemachine, also the timemachine does not appear to let me specify specific volumes and folders when selecting disks.

I am aware that one of the problems was that the format of the disk is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so I have tested another partition which is now formatted to FAT 32

I was setting up as follows:

HOST: IP address of the macbook (also tried name of the eternal HD drive)

Protocal: remote:nfs

Share: /Volumes/folder name (same as mount point description though tried various other combinations)

Login and password: Macbook login (also tried without)

In addition I tried various permutations without any luck and always get the same error: Unable to connect to host  Code 7077010011

Checked the source folder is set to shared, permissions for the folder are set to readand write as default.

I know the macbook can see the ReadyNAS as I have also set up a private timemachine to back up the Macbook which is working as expected.

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Heath

Afraid I've only just been able to look at this again after investigating NFS protocols and soon decided this was not the best approach for what I want.  Anyway I now understand how this works, so created a fresh backup and this time put the share name only without the full path using just the Windows NAS/timestamp option, entered Login and password and tested the connection, this time it was successful, so I've managed to do a full test of a backup.  The same also true for local to remote back up from ReadyNAS to FREENAS, so I am very happy I can now achieve all the backup options I need.

    Thanks for your help

    Hi HeathM,

I am not a MAC user so I am not that sure about this as well. Further checking though, I found that in order for you to use the NFS protocol for back-up on a MAC OS; you need to set an NFS share. I checked on how to do this on a MAC OS and it involves some console commands.

To be honest I cannot say if setting the source folder to shared does an NFS share already but you may want to check with someone for MAC support.

As an alternative, you can also connect your USB drive to one of the USB ports on the NAS and setup a back-up job for a Local source and a Local destination.

    Regards,
