Backup ALL local shares to USB drive
Hi,
I just wondered how to use USB as a Backup destination for RN 102, because it will always copy data from inside the share to the root of the USB device, and that for each share, mixing up the shares.
As workaround, I tried to specify a destination folder on the USB drive for every share, but that is greyed out.
In addition, I tried a volume backup (/data) but that is not possible due to the enabled snapshots of btrfs, the required space just grows exponential for me (USB drive has no btrfs). Is there any way to exclude snapshots for volume backups?
My current solution is creating folders for each share on each new backup USB drive and then manually changing the destination to a share on the drive, but a) I have to change it for each new Backup drive, and b) it is annoying to change all the backup jobs for each shared folder...
And why is coping to ntfs faster than coping to ext* drives? Strange...
Best,
Mike

- So, is there a solution?
I get read only errors on any USB port with a 2TB NTFS formatted USB drive off of my new ReadyNAS 102 with firmware 6.1.8
Cannot create new folders, cannot do backup, cannot delete files on USB.
NAS itself functions well.
Any help?
Thanks in advance... - Maybe try to reformat the usb drive. It looks like it is mounted read only. I had this a couple of time after nas-software crash, so i had to pull the mains plug with a not proper unmount.
Allso pulling the usbdrive out of the nas without proper unmount can cause this. - How do I fix it?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you connect it to a windows system, does it offer to repair the file system? If it does, let it.
- Thanks
I reattached to the Win 8.1 computer and re-formatted the drive (NTFS) and it is working!
Thanks very much - nickbatchAspirantHi,
This "read only" issue is a real pain. It seems to be caused by a power outage or if the USB device is not properly disconnected. Best to disconnect when NAS is powered off.
Also. To fix the "read only" problem a format is not required. This changes the "identity" of the USB device as used by the NAS which messes up each share back up job.
To fix using XP Pro
1) Make sure you have administrator privileges on the XP machine
2) Attach the USB device
3) Open Windows Explorer
4) Locate the USB device within "My Computer" (Probably drive E but can vary)
5) Select that drive by clicking on it
6) bring up the "Right Mouse" menu
7) Click on Properties
8) Click on the "Tools" tab
9) Click the "Check Now" button
10) Select "Automatically fix file system errors"
11) Click Start
12) When its complete - safely disconnect the USB device from the Windows machine
13) Reconnect the USB device to the NAS and all should now work. (well it does for me :) )
This can be done using Win 7 or 8 although the dialogs may be different.
Hope this is of assistance
Nick
Nick - diablienAspirantAm I the only one that is not getting a connection to "localhost"? Seems weird that it is not recognizing that or unable to connect to that.
- AJL_ElectronicsAspirantI am having issues with USB.
I have 1.24 Tb on the NAS with no snapshots. I have set up an RSYNC transfer to a 1.5Tb drive (1.37 available) of each share. Initially I formatted to EXT3 and manually transferred the data over, before setting up the backup jobs. Os is the latest Beta 7 for the RN102.
The backups seem to take forever and the space on the USB (2.0) drive is vanishing fast and I am about to run out. My thought was that it may be due to my editing the source, removing some data and moving other data around, but I thought that RSYNC was clever enough to deal with that? I have looked for an option called delete files on target, but haven't found it anywhere. - AJL_ElectronicsAspirantI think I may have answered my own query. I have found "delete files on target" which I thought referred to emptying the drive first, so hadn't selected it. We will see how it goes now!
