Backup not working
I haven't run my regular backup jobs for a month. In that time I have:
Replaced disk #1 after failure & resynced
Replaced disk #2 after failure & resynced
Upgraded to version 4 of FrontView
None of my previously existing Remote: Windows (NAS/Timestamp) backup jobs work. I get an "unable to access remote share" error.
I have tried:
1) Resetting up the backup job - still get "unable to acess" error
2) Swapping forward slashes for back slashes - still get error
3) Verified the backup locations are reachable from other locations on my Windows network.
Attached is a snippet from one of my backup jobs. Any help would be appreciated:

Actually, that's the odd thing - they really don't. The only difference between the working and non-working jobs are, of course the source path, and the destination path. For each, the source path is a different location on the same server, on the same drive. For the destination, each destination is simply a unique NAS share. I am logging on to all of the source locations using the same username and password, and that tests OK for every job.
Do the backup sources differ in terms of path depth? For example //server/data/folder would be deeper than //server/other.
Of the 10 backup jobs that run nightly (all were originally set as "Timestamp"):
8 of them are the same depth: //server1/data/folder
2 of them are one level shorter: //server1/folder
For some reason:
-the 2 "shorter" ones continue to work as Timestamp jobs (I didn't have to change those).
-6 out of the remaining other 8 jobs failed (2 of those still worked) when set to Timestamp.
-If I set the remaining 8 jobs to "Archive Bit", they complete successfully. - nasnewbAspirantUpdate -
A friend and I got a folder pair to backup using CIFS from the old NV to the new NV+. Ran backup between the two, which went for about 26 hours (190Gb or 2Mb/sec....).
I already a week or so ago had manually copied most files over from the NV to the NV+ when I couldnt get the NV+ backup functionality to work....because it was the classic interocular regression (I had to eyeball it, couldnt drag and drop, thats another story) I may have missed some....and I know I did b/c the file counts were off between source and destination about 200 out of ~113,000 - .18% :-)
Results:
1) 113,829 files in 6,983 folders in source (NV) and 113,605 files in 6,861 folders in destination (NV+) before running backup....our starting point
2) Backup ran ~26 hours during which you could hear both units running, blinking activity lights, etc
3) Backup logs said 'no logs exist for this' all throughout backup until the end. At conclusion, they are now so long, they crash the web browser that tries to access them....indicating apparently thousands and thousands of files copied....I can see at least a few hundred "filename path -> filename path" as I scroll through the first windows before it crashes
4) Despite #3, there is not one difference now after backup to the destination folder....same 113,605 files in 6,861 folders as when I started 26 hours ago....not a single change
Additionally, when setting up access to the the NV folder (which has a user name and pasword ) from the NV+ Backup Scheduler....test connection would always work, provided there was at least one character (hilariously any character!) in the user field...didnt matter what was in password field (it could have been blank or populated with nonsense; didnt matter)....and it never mattered if anything entered in either user or password field was really the right credentials. With at least one character in the user name field, test connection would always say successful
However, ultimately access wasnt allowed until the correct credentials were entered for both - otherwise test connection would say successful and but running the backup would cause the backup to fail immediate for access violation.
However, "admin" had to be the user name for the backup to work, although my machine forces access as " /Guest" and although admin is not actually the username I had used
Lastly, Flexkeeth, Ive never heard from the trouble ticket and logs submitted Sunday
I will post back early next week after I find a few more hours to waste this weekend playing with everything trying to get advertised functionality to work.... - nasnewbAspirantSorry, never posted back. We just decided to get rid of the box for a confluence of reasons...too many problems/randomness in output given controlled or uniform input....our old c. '06 NV worked find and this brand new NV+ did not under identical set ups (as you saw above)... 4.0 firmware tons of issues seems like from the forums....not to suggest everyone with problems should dump their box, we are just fortunate enough to be able to do so and move on....but this does not appear to be the same company we dealt with in '06....our guess is they are straining under a ferocious load internally. Flexkeeth, my final update is 14 days never heard anything of the logs that were submitted...
nn - flexkeethAspirantI appreciate your working this problem as long as you did. Best of luck in the future. If you ever hear anything from "the company" regarding your NV+ problems please let us know. Adiós.
- ajwhAspirantAdd me to the list of folks having problems!
I've got an NASV+ with 4x500MB X-raid, RAIDiator-4.1.3-T120, and I just want to backup a Windows XPPro SP3 box with 4 partitions - C,D,E and F to a share called "Backup". The DNS is on a Netgear DG834N, and I'm using a D-Link Gigabyte switch.
Should be easy, but I just can't get it to work. I realise I'm a newbie (I've only been using computers since 1975) and I need some help......
Andrew - ewokNETGEAR ExpertSo how is it not working? Error messages?
How is your Windows box configured to share those partitions? Are they password protected?
Which protocol are you using in the backup manager? - ajwhAspirantSo how is it not working? Error messages?
I get the "connection failed" error, regardless of slash direction etc....
How is your Windows box configured to share those partitions?
I've set the partition to allow sharing
Are they password protected?
No
Which protocol are you using in the backup manager?
"Windows/timestamp"
Just a thought - could this have anything to do with the recent XP security patch which fixed a DNS server issue and messed up with Zonewall?
See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951748
It's funny that there seem to be quite a few users who've just got problems.....
BTW, I'm currently using Retrospect backup on this machine.
Andrew - ewokNETGEAR ExpertPlease give the latest beta or next official release a try. There was a problem with backing up some Windows systems with guest access to the share (no username and password) that was fixed recently.
- ajwhAspirantI'm currently at: RAIDiator-4.1.3-T120
Andrew - ewokNETGEAR ExpertTry using the IP address of the source machine if you are not already doing so.
Does the Test Connection button report success?
Please post the complete setup for the backup job.
