Good points. Alternatively I could get 5 different external drive cases with eSATA & USB support. This would avoid the 'bare hard drive' handling. And cases are cheap, I suppose. The more I think about that, the better it sounds for reasons you've mentioned. Now, the question is - can ReadyNAS handle an encrypted external drive as a backup/restore destination?
The EDA500 isn't really what I'm looking for - I need to be able to take the drives off-site one at a time, and hot-swapping drives out of that device has the same drawbacks as a dock.
