Backuping Synology to ReadyNas

Hello Guys,

I have a Readynas 4 bay running version 6.10.4.

It is running just fine.

However, I have a problem when I try to use it to act as the back up of a Synology NAS.

I use HyperBackup to try to configure the backup.

I must, because of HyperBackup, use rsyncd.conf :-(

Here is the rsyncd.conf that I use:

---

[WhateverBackup]
path = /home/whatever
comment = Rsync for whatever
use chroot = false
uid = whatever
gid = Backup

---

when I try configure the backup (through HyperBackup), I do see the 'WhateverBackup', which is a good sign... But just after, it fails, and I see in the logs of the ReadyNas:

---

Mar 08 15:17:50 XXXrsyncd[15434]: forward name lookup for MYIPADDRESS failed: Name or service not known
Mar 08 15:17:50 XXX rsyncd[15434]: connect from UNKNOWN (IPADDRESS)
Mar 08 15:17:50 XXX rsyncd[15434]: rsync allowed access on module KirikouBackup from UNKNOWN (IPADDRESS)
Mar 08 15:17:50 XXXrsyncd[15434]: rsync: setgroups failed: Operation not permitted (1)

---

Can some please explain me what is the 'setgroups failed' message ?

Thank you in advance,

YG

  • uid is User ID and gid is Group ID.  I'm not familiar with the backup methods available on Synology, but it looks like you are not using a user and/or group ID that the ReadyNAS recognizes.

    It may be easier to configure a "pull" backup from the ReadyNAS instead of doing that "push" from the Synology.  That would be especially good if you are only powering the ReadyNAS on for the backup, as it will wait for a completed backup it controls before shutting down, but not an external one.

      Hello Sandshark,

      Unfortunately, 'pulling' is not an option for me. FW issues :-) And not only :-) So I really need to have this rsync protocole run smoothly. :-(

        So try admin for both the user and group and see if that works.
